Spirit Stories

Spirituality in Narrative

Spirituality of Stage and Screen

The Shape of Sabbath

Spirit Stories
Jesus taught in parables. He did this because he recognized the impact of story. This power comes in part because of the potential ambiguity and the opportunity for each of us to interpret the stories in our own way. Both the Hebrew and Greco-Roman cultures into which Jesus was born were infused with story as a way to convey meaning and ask important questions. This year we will encounter 5 big stories (and some others alongside them) that raise interesting ideas for our consideration.

THEME: “The Shape of Sabbath - How Stories Shape our Understanding of the World”
9/1 – Cesar Chavez: Sabbath is Shaped Like Justice
9/8 – Fiddler on the Roof: Sabbath is Shaped Like Expansiveness
9/15 – Lion King: Sabbath is Shaped Like Courage
9/22 – Hairspray: Sabbath is Shaped Like Reconciliation
9/29 – Frozen: Sabbath is Shaped Like Forgiveness

You can find these films on most streaming services. You are encouraged to gather with friends to watch the film and then have some conversation about its themes. We will meet on Thursday evenings at 6:30 in the Parlor to watch the films, beginning with Fiddler on 9/5 (We will circle back and watch Cesar Chavez at a later date).

A simple meal will be served. If you want to sign up to help with the meal, please contact the church office.

Seeking Input for New Teaching Series Coming this Fall

It’s easy to recognize that Jesus loved to teach through stories. Nearly every description of God’s kingdom involves a narrative. When he described God’s love for us and the aspiration of our love for neighbor, again he told stories.

In our own lives we experience the power of telling our own stories, hearing the stories of others, and immersing ourselves in a novel, TV show, movie or play. Even poems and songs, however brief, enfold us in imaginary worlds that move us.

This Fall we will again explore the spirituality of stage and screen. You are invited to share below stage plays, musicals or films which you find powerful or provocative. Which stories from our culture give insight into the human condition and call us to our better selves? Which characters highlight the heights and depths of this life? Which teach you about God and self?
